Dr. Sowers is an Assistant Professor at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital and a Research Health Science Specialist at the Iowa City VA Health Care Center. He received his PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the University of Iowa in 2012 and has worked with Dr. Andrew Russo studying migraine since 2014. His research focuses on the pathophysiology of migraine in preclinical models, with an emphasis on the neural circuitry underlying photophobia and pain. Dr. Sowers’ recent work concentrates on cerebellar-thalamic networks and how CGRP and CGRP-producing neurons within these networks contribute to headache-like hypersensitivity. His current work is funded by a 4-year MERIT award through the Office of Research and Development at the VA. He is also the cofounder and co-host of the Vets First podcast, which communicates research to Veterans.
