Racial/ethnic minoritized individuals may experience racialized discrimination in the form of racism. Interestingly, racism is considered a fundamental cause of adverse health outcomes for racial/ethnic minoritized individuals and racial/ethnic inequities in health. Racism can be stressful and traumatizing, eliciting a response comparable to posttraumatic stress in those who experience it. Racial trauma is a form of racialized-based stress and is often cumulative. It is often experienced by Black/African Americans, Indigenous and people of color in Westernized countries and it refers to experiences related to threats, prejudices, harm, shame, humiliation, and guilt associated with various types of racial discrimination, either for direct victims or witnesses.
