A history of trauma can predispose individuals to migraine and other headache and inflammatory disorders. What are the mechanisms by which this happens? In humans it can be hard to delineate specific mechanistic contributors because each person’s experiences and family history are different. Here I will describe the use of a mouse model of early life stress, which enables the controlled study of specific stressors across a population. I will discuss the impact of early life stress on brain networks related to the emotional aspects of pain and the interrelationship of stress and the brain’s response to the migraine-inducing peptide CGRP.
Learning Objectives:
explain the relationship between early life adversity and headache/migraine in adulthood
describe the relationship between early life adversity and brain network activity
appreciate the involvement of emotional brain networks of pain in response to peripheral migraine triggers
